Our fearless leader Tbone, tattoos one of the science Obsessed…

Check out a new book by Carl Zimmer, Science Ink

In 2007, Carl Zimmer posed a question on his blog: are scientists hiding tattoos of their science? It turned out that many of them were, and they were willing to share their ink with him and the world. Zimmer has posted hundreds of these images in the years since.  In Science Ink, he assembles his favorite images from his blog, along with previously unpublished ones, and writes about the science behind the pictures, and the scientists behind the science. From archaeology to astronomy, from neuroscience to chemistry, Science Ink is a guide to the universe, illustrated on the bodies of scientists

If you’re free Tuesday, January 24, please join Carl Zimmer for a talk at the New York Academy of Sciences. He’ll be delivering an anthropological lecture about an intriguing sub-culture that expresses itself with body inscriptions. He speaks, of course, of scientists with tattoos.
At my last talk, at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the evening was enhanced with the presence of actual, flesh-and-blood scientists with tattoos, some of whom appear in the pages of Science Ink. If you are a member of this inky, geeky clan and are planning on coming to the New York talk, please let him know so that he can try to work you into the presentation.
Here are some of the details…
When: Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM. (A reception will follow.)

Richie Van interviewed on Fox New about “Kitchen Magicians and Johnny Table Tops”

A North Country woman is facing criminal charges after police say she gave homemade tattoos to two young teenage girls.
Now professional tattoo artists say do-it-yourself tattoos can be very dangerous. Reputable tattoo shops like the ones on Lark Street should not have people worried. They’re licensed and the tattoo artists have years of training.

As important as the art at Lark Tattoo, the workers there say safety is their primary concern. They say the shop is just as clean as a dentist’s office, if not cleaner, and anyone getting a tattoo has to show two forms of ID and sign a consent form.

Tattoo artist Rich Van says he frequently meets people whose tattoos were done elsewhere under questionable circumstances.

“I see a lot of, we call them ‘scratchers’ but a lot of people are just getting scratched up by their friends who are called ‘Johnny Tabletops’ or ‘kitchen magicians,” said Van.

Whitehall police say that’s what 18-year-old Shaelynne Gordon was doing earlier this month.  Investigators arrested Gordon on Monday. They say she tattooed two girls, one 12, the other 13.  Police Whitehall say they first started investigating the case last week when they say they got a call from the local high school principal. Investigators say the two young girls were worried about their homemade tattoos and went to the school nurse with their concerns.

FOX23 News found Gordon at her home but she didn’t want to talk.

Police say she is not a licensed tattoo artist.  Professional artists say a lot can go wrong with a homemade tattoo.

“Well, you’ll get a bad tattoo more often than not,” said Van. “Then, there’s cellulitis, staph infections, MRSA, all of which are pretty easy to get if you don’t know just proper hygiene and cleaning it.”

Rich advises people to stick with reputable, licensed shops and steer clear of any do-it-yourself tattoos.

“It looks cool on TV to be a tattooer, so they just think they can buy the kit and go home and tag their friends up and they’re instantly, rock stars. It doesn’t work that way,” said Van.

Rich says there are tattoos he just won’t do. He won’t do people’s hands, necks, and faces unless they’ve already got other tattoos there.

Shaelynne Gordon is only facing misdemeanor charges.

Whitehall police say an 18-year-old woman is arrested for tattooing two underage girls. Police say their investigation began after the 12 and 13-year-old girls complained about the body art to a school nurse.  Shaelynn Gordon is accused of tattooing the minors. Police say the girls became nervous and went to the nurse’s office at Whitehall Central School when their tattoos began scabbing.  Police are not sure if Gordon used a clean needle but say the girls have had no other problems from the tattoos.

Gordon is now charged with two counts of tattooing a child less than 18, a misdemeanor.

FOX23’s Paul Merrill is following the story and will have more tonight at 10 and 11.

Say No! To Tattoo School on TLC!

Say no to “Tattoo School” on TLC!!!

Contact the Discovery network through viewer relations and tell them you are against this show at hftp:/ / corporate.discovery.com / contact/ viewer-relations/

Join the “Boycoff Tattoo School” community on facebook.com and help stay, and keep, others informed.

It is the position of the National Tattoo Association, Inc. that,“Tattoo School”, the latest television show about tattooing on The Learning Channel, is a detriment to the profession of tattooing and likely a danger to the general public. This show portrays tattooing as easy to leam and discusses very little about safety or disease prevention. The idea that a tattooer can learn, in two weeks, everything necessary to properly execute a taffoo in a competent and safe manner is absurd.
It is recommended that a minimum of 2 years be spent in an apprenticeship studying the art of tattooing from a professional, licensed, and reputable tattoo artist. It is also important that anyone interested in becoming a taffoo artist be trained in first-aid and CPR, and receives proper training in blood borne pathogens.
