LONG ISLAND ROLLER REBELS, the official roller derby team of Lark Tattoo, is featured in Newsday!

A nice writeup in today's Newsday about the LONG ISLAND ROLLER REBELS, a team that LARK TATTOO is very PROUD to be affiliated with and support!

You might recognize the derby girl with outstreched hands, who is leading the pack of brawlers in the Newsday picture, as it is no other than Wushu Sugar, a LONG TIME friend and client of Lark Tatoo, who can often be spotted getting new work at Lark Tattoo; in fact, the tattoo on her thigh is a derby-inspired Alice in Wonderland tattoo that is being done by Lark Tattoo's very own Andrew Mann.

Long Island Roller Rebels addicted to a bruising sport

Lauren Madonia said she was looking for a team-oriented sport in 2005 when a friend told her, "I have two words for you: roller derby." Nearly a decade later, Madonia has three words for herself: "It's an addiction."
Madonia, of Lindenhurst, is a founder of the Long Island Roller Rebels, a flat-track roller derby league whose members have alter-ego personas with nicknames like Attackacardic, Lucille Wrecking Ball, Account DeeRacula, Wushu Sugar and Femme&M.
Their derby names are often a take on what the members, who number more than 30, do for a living. Madonia, 33, is a medical biller whose name -- Captain Morgan -- reflects her role in creating the league. There is a programmer and an accountant, a health care worker and a receptionist. One team member is a phlebotomist -- a blood collector -- for the American Red Cross. Which, all things considered, probably is more than a little ironic.

The league competes on two teams -- the All Stars and the Rock-A-Betty Bruisers -- in the international Women's Flat Track Derby Association. Matches are held about once a month, usually on Saturdays, at Skate Safe America in Old Bethpage. On Sunday, the Roller Rebels host a team from Helsinski, Finland (the game starts at noon; tickets are $5 at the door).
Whoever is playing, don't expect anything resembling the 1972 "Kansas City Bomber" movie classic with Raquel Welch.
"It tends to attract women who didn't play team sports before," said Juliana Gonzales, executive director of the Austin, Texas-based derby association. "Traditional notions of femininity and size tend to be discarded."
Madonia saw that for herself when her friend dragged her to a match between teams from the top-ranked Manhattan-based Gotham Girls Roller Derby.
"It was just so cool," Madonia recalled. "These girls were all dressed up, beating the crap out of each other. . . . It looked like a lot of fun."
Others must think so, too.
There are 243 member leagues -- in Holland, England, Scotland, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, Canada, Colombia, Australia and France -- and more than 30,000 competitors in three divisions, Gonzales said. Long Island has one of the most active leagues, she added.
Games consist of two 30-minute periods. There are penalties, and tripping and slide-tackling are prohibited.
Madonia said she has broken ribs and a foot and has lost count of her bumps and bruises. She gave birth to daughter Adelyn about two months ago, but motherhood and pending nuptials aren't the only things on her mind.
"I just had a baby and the first thing I thought was, 'I can't wait to get back out there.' "

Autism Fundraiser at Lark Tattoo

Lark Tattoo, via its Westbury, and Albany, NY, locations team up with Ink 4 Autism to raise awareness and donations for the Autism Speaks Foundation through tattooing!

Lark Tattoo, since openings its doors in 1993, has been committed to creating incredible custom tattooing and piercings. Lark Tattoo hosts over a dozen highly skilled professional tattoo artists along with a full schedule of guests artists from around the world. The crew has been published and awarded by numerous national and international organizations, and built its reputation on fine custom tattooing and exceptional customer service. As a client of Lark Tattoo you will always experience a level of respect and gratitude seldom seen in the industry.

A tattoo shop might be the last place you might look for a group of philanthropic and big-hearted individuals, but then again, Lark Tattoo is not your typical tattoo shop. The artists of Lark Tattoo are committed to not only making a difference in the tattoo and piercing community, but also the the global community the artists live and work in. Autism is a topic that strikes a personal chord with Lark Tattoo, as several of the artists have family and/or friends who have been diagnosed with Autism.

Lark Tattoo realizes that Autism research and awareness do not come free, and if more answers are going to be found, everyone needs to help, however possible.
Both of the Lark Tattoo shops, Westbury, NY, and Albany, NY, will be donating a portion of the proceeds for ANY Autism inspired tattoo done during the month of April. April is Autism Awareness month, and Lark Tattoo sees this as a time to do their part!

For further information about Lark Tattoo, the fundraiser, and/or to inquire go to Lark Tattoo’s website larktattoo.com, and/or their Facebook page facebook.com/larktattoo. Lark Tattoo can also be reached for comments by phone 516-794-5844, or by email charity@larktattoo.com. A Valentine’s Day Surprise

Lark Tattoo's artist Miss D’Jo helped Andrew Capriotti with his plan to pop the question to his girlfriend, Suzanne Juarez, as an extra special Valentine's Day surprise. Andrew had his artist, D’Jo, work the engagement ring in to his tattoo, so when he showed the tattoo to Suzanne for the first time, and she saw the ring in his tattoo, he presented her with the real thing, asking her to marry him. We are happy to report that she said yes! What a great surprise and fantastic way to preserve the moment with a  tattoo. We wish Andrew and Suzanne all the best as they begin the next chapter in their lives together!

Our fearless leader Tbone, tattoos one of the science Obsessed…

Check out a new book by Carl Zimmer, Science Ink

In 2007, Carl Zimmer posed a question on his blog: are scientists hiding tattoos of their science? It turned out that many of them were, and they were willing to share their ink with him and the world. Zimmer has posted hundreds of these images in the years since.  In Science Ink, he assembles his favorite images from his blog, along with previously unpublished ones, and writes about the science behind the pictures, and the scientists behind the science. From archaeology to astronomy, from neuroscience to chemistry, Science Ink is a guide to the universe, illustrated on the bodies of scientists

If you’re free Tuesday, January 24, please join Carl Zimmer for a talk at the New York Academy of Sciences. He’ll be delivering an anthropological lecture about an intriguing sub-culture that expresses itself with body inscriptions. He speaks, of course, of scientists with tattoos.
At my last talk, at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the evening was enhanced with the presence of actual, flesh-and-blood scientists with tattoos, some of whom appear in the pages of Science Ink. If you are a member of this inky, geeky clan and are planning on coming to the New York talk, please let him know so that he can try to work you into the presentation.
Here are some of the details…
When: Tuesday, January 24, 2012, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM. (A reception will follow.)

Richie Van interviewed on Fox New about “Kitchen Magicians and Johnny Table Tops”

Click the link for the video; http://www.fox23news.com/s/PLA5gp7iFkqT9LzVushvgQ.cspx

A North Country woman is facing criminal charges after police say she gave homemade tattoos to two young teenage girls.
Now professional tattoo artists say do-it-yourself tattoos can be very dangerous. Reputable tattoo shops like the ones on Lark Street should not have people worried. They’re licensed and the tattoo artists have years of training.

As important as the art at Lark Tattoo, the workers there say safety is their primary concern. They say the shop is just as clean as a dentist’s office, if not cleaner, and anyone getting a tattoo has to show two forms of ID and sign a consent form.

Tattoo artist Rich Van says he frequently meets people whose tattoos were done elsewhere under questionable circumstances.

“I see a lot of, we call them ‘scratchers’ but a lot of people are just getting scratched up by their friends who are called ‘Johnny Tabletops’ or ‘kitchen magicians,” said Van.

Whitehall police say that’s what 18-year-old Shaelynne Gordon was doing earlier this month.  Investigators arrested Gordon on Monday. They say she tattooed two girls, one 12, the other 13.  Police Whitehall say they first started investigating the case last week when they say they got a call from the local high school principal. Investigators say the two young girls were worried about their homemade tattoos and went to the school nurse with their concerns.

FOX23 News found Gordon at her home but she didn’t want to talk.

Police say she is not a licensed tattoo artist.  Professional artists say a lot can go wrong with a homemade tattoo.

“Well, you’ll get a bad tattoo more often than not,” said Van. “Then, there’s cellulitis, staph infections, MRSA, all of which are pretty easy to get if you don’t know just proper hygiene and cleaning it.”

Rich advises people to stick with reputable, licensed shops and steer clear of any do-it-yourself tattoos.

“It looks cool on TV to be a tattooer, so they just think they can buy the kit and go home and tag their friends up and they’re instantly, rock stars. It doesn’t work that way,” said Van.

Rich says there are tattoos he just won’t do. He won’t do people’s hands, necks, and faces unless they’ve already got other tattoos there.

Shaelynne Gordon is only facing misdemeanor charges.

Whitehall police say an 18-year-old woman is arrested for tattooing two underage girls. Police say their investigation began after the 12 and 13-year-old girls complained about the body art to a school nurse.  Shaelynn Gordon is accused of tattooing the minors. Police say the girls became nervous and went to the nurse’s office at Whitehall Central School when their tattoos began scabbing.  Police are not sure if Gordon used a clean needle but say the girls have had no other problems from the tattoos.

Gordon is now charged with two counts of tattooing a child less than 18, a misdemeanor.

FOX23’s Paul Merrill is following the story and will have more tonight at 10 and 11.

Say No! To Tattoo School on TLC!

.
Say no to “Tattoo School” on TLC!!!

Contact the Discovery network through viewer relations and tell them you are against this show at hftp:/ / corporate.discovery.com / contact/ viewer-relations/

Join the “Boycoff Tattoo School” community on facebook.com and help stay, and keep, others informed.

It is the position of the National Tattoo Association, Inc. that,“Tattoo School”, the latest television show about tattooing on The Learning Channel, is a detriment to the profession of tattooing and likely a danger to the general public. This show portrays tattooing as easy to leam and discusses very little about safety or disease prevention. The idea that a tattooer can learn, in two weeks, everything necessary to properly execute a taffoo in a competent and safe manner is absurd.
It is recommended that a minimum of 2 years be spent in an apprenticeship studying the art of tattooing from a professional, licensed, and reputable tattoo artist. It is also important that anyone interested in becoming a taffoo artist be trained in first-aid and CPR, and receives proper training in blood borne pathogens.
